Common Causes Of Neck Pain

Neck pain is becoming more common, with poor work/life balance as a leading cause. But 90% of our clients experience improvement after just a few treatments.  The main causes include:
pain
A traumatic event, like a car crash or skiing accident, perhaps leading to “whiplash”
pain
Lifting something awkwardly, or unexpectedly heavy
pain
Working on screens, with perhaps less than ideal setup
pain
Sports injuries, exercise routines or maybe not enough exercise
pain
Wear and tear as you get older, leading to inflammation and compression of your neck, with disc injuries and trapped nerves into the arm

Neck Pain Explained In Plain English

Neck pain is becoming an epidemic in the UK, even amongst children as they study long hours and peer at screens in awkward positions.

Neck pain ranges from an annoying pinch that comes and goes, to drastic strain and pain where any head movement is excruciating.

Sometimes with rest and time things improve, but more often the problem doesn’t get 100% better and feels stiff, painful or vulnerable. This means you are stuck, afraid of getting back to normal activities. This is when a professional opinion and treatment is really helpful.

Untreated, these pains can go from short easy to fix problems, to long term and harder to fix problems. Nobody likes taking pain killers or contemplating surgery. It’s important to choose a treatment which is safe, effective and proven thousands of times over all over the world. We recommend a course of treatment before contemplating long term medication or surgery, and evidence in research shows 90% of people are very satisfied with their improvement after only six treatments.

What Are The Major Causes Of Neck Pain?

Everybody knows about the common causes of neck pain such as whiplash and stress. Let’s dive in a little deeper looking at what goes wrong with your neck.

Ricked Neck

Also known as wry neck or locked neck, this is where small structures in the joints of your neck get trapped in the wrong place, and the neck is stuck and painful. This can even happen in children.

Joint strain

Your neck is a column of small joints and discs, a marvel of engineering. However, after a strain the joints, just like a sprained ankle, can get swollen inflamed and sore. Treatment and the correct advice can really speed recovery, so you can get back to work and play.

Wear and Tear

With age or a history of neck injury, the joints and muscles can end up a bit sorry for themselves. A lot of our work is getting the neck back to 100% by careful and steady treatment to safely reverse the effects of time.

Trapped Nerve

Our nerves that allow us to feel sensation and move our arms can get trapped as they exit the neck. When this happens you feel it in your shoulder or arm, with maybe shooting pains or pins and needles. Although it feels serious it is often easy to treat, by straightening out the bones of the neck and bringing down any swelling that may be pressing on the nerve.

How Does An Osteopath Treat Neck Pain?

An Osteopath will only use their hands and brain to skilfully and logically assess your symptoms. We train for many years to feel what is normal and what is in trouble, and Osteopathy is a fantastic method for getting your body back in tip-top shape again.

The neck is full of important and delicate structures, and it is important to choose a treatment from an expert you can trust to be both safe and effective. We train for many years to deeply understand neck pain and how it affects you. We will respectfully, carefully and skilfully propose a treatment plan to get you back to normal again.

This means you can be well in a truly natural way, by in the end, the miracle of your body healing itself.

And here's the best bit... By fixing the root cause of your problems, frequently people find that related issues that are connected also show drastic improvement, so you get help with all sorts of issues you didn’t even realise were connected. For example, did you know many digestive problems are caused by upper neck trouble?

I took my baby to see Katherine to help with sleeping issues. She immediately noted areas of tightness causing him pain and after one session he was sleeping through the night. After four sessions he was a different baby, sleeping and eating batter leading to a much happier baby. I wish I had taken him earlier!

Andrew Cotton is such professional, experienced, gifted, caring and talented Osteopath. I am so lucky to have found him to resolve a neck issue which was giving me the most horrendous pain in my shoulder and migraines. I was in agony when I first arrived and a few sessions later, I am now pain free, have a much greater range of movement and able to turn my neck again! Such a brilliant result! Thank you Andrew for your talent.

I first discovered Fulham Osteopaths as a sleep-deprived first time Mum - I did not know what osteopathy was before then! I am so grateful to have Fulham Osteopaths as part of my community - Melinda is so lovely (as are her staff!) and the practice exemplifies holistic care that is critically missing in many parts of our health system. Now my whole family receives care from the practice and every time, no matter the niggle (or emergency!) we receive excellent care throughout. Many thanks!!
