Migraines & Headaches Explained In Plain English

There are two common kinds of headaches, tension headache and migraine. They are both quite different, and some unfortunate people have both!

It varies from a dull ache that comes and goes in the back of your head, to shooting pain over the head and behind your eyes.

Sometimes with rest and time things improve, but more often the problem doesn’t get 100% better and feels achy, painful or vulnerable. It often just comes and goes. This means you are stuck, afraid of getting back to normal activities. Lets look at both kinds a bit more deeply.

Tension Headache

Typically, trouble in the top of your neck leads to tension and spasm in the muscles that anchor your head to your neck. The small joints in your neck are strained, the nerves to your head are irritated, and the end result is headache. The problem in your head comes from your neck, and the neck must be properly treated to get long term relief. We have specialised in treating headache for many years, and can say with confidence that we have a protocol for treatment which is gentle, safe and highly effective, with over 90% of patients achieving complete relief from tension headache pain.

Migraine

Often this comes in a wave, so you know it is coming, and builds to a crescendo which can last days. It often comes with nausea, eye sensitivity and dizziness. It is a problem with the control of blood flow in your brain, which is why it is “triggered”, by food, the weather or hormone cycles. It is frustrating to try to figure out triggers, and avoid them. This is because migraine is caused by blood vessel constriction, but you get the migraine when the tension releases. You must treat the cause of the blood vessel constriction in the first place or you will never be free of it. This is more difficult to treat than tension headache, but we treat reflexes from the spine that irritate the nerves to the blood vessels, treatment that steadily reduces the frequency and severity of the migraine.

How Does An Osteopath Treat Migraines & Headaches?

We have run a specialist headache clinic for over twenty years, helping thousands of people achieve complete relief of their pain. We have a special protocol which relaxes the neck and takes away the neck and head pain (and it’s causes), so that the tension which creates your headache is removed, and the pain steadily reduces.

And here's the best bit... By fixing the root cause of your problems, frequently people find that related issues that are connected also show drastic improvement, so you get help with all sorts of issues you didn’t even realise were connected. For example, many issues with dizziness, brain fog and even digestion are resolved when your headache is relieved.

We have written an interesting and informative Blog post about Headache and it’s causes, you can read it here.

I took my baby to see Katherine to help with sleeping issues. She immediately noted areas of tightness causing him pain and after one session he was sleeping through the night. After four sessions he was a different baby, sleeping and eating batter leading to a much happier baby. I wish I had taken him earlier!

Andrew Cotton is such professional, experienced, gifted, caring and talented Osteopath. I am so lucky to have found him to resolve a neck issue which was giving me the most horrendous pain in my shoulder and migraines. I was in agony when I first arrived and a few sessions later, I am now pain free, have a much greater range of movement and able to turn my neck again! Such a brilliant result! Thank you Andrew for your talent.

I first discovered Fulham Osteopaths as a sleep-deprived first time Mum - I did not know what osteopathy was before then! I am so grateful to have Fulham Osteopaths as part of my community - Melinda is so lovely (as are her staff!) and the practice exemplifies holistic care that is critically missing in many parts of our health system. Now my whole family receives care from the practice and every time, no matter the niggle (or emergency!) we receive excellent care throughout. Many thanks!!
