Hip Pain Explained In Plain English

Hip pain affects our leg movement due to a combination of issues with your muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. It is usually felt at the front of the hip, pain at the back usually described as buttock pain.

Hip pain ranges from an annoying niggle that comes and goes, to severe pain.

Sometimes Hip problems resolve with time, rest or exercise. More often the problem doesn’t get better properly and feels stiff, painful or vulnerable so you are afraid of getting back to normal activities. This is when a professional opinion and treatment is really helpful.

Untreated, unfortunately these pains can go from short easy to fix problems, to long term and harder to fix problems. Nobody likes taking pain killers or contemplating surgery. It’s important to choose a treatment which is safe, effective and proven thousands of times over all over the world.

What Are The Major Causes Of Hip Pain?

We've already dealt with some of the common causes such as trauma and wear and tear. However, let’s dive in a little deeper to see which Hip conditions Osteopathic care provides a safe non surgical solution for:

Clicking Hip

Sometimes the hip clicks, either regularly or at random, or catches painfully and unexpectedly. There can be disturbance inside the joint, or the back and pelvis is unbalanced leading to “mistracking”. This means something not running smoothly in it’s socket.

Arthritis

Arthritis of the hip is a condition that results from wear and tear of your hip ball and socket. It is quite common, building as you get older, but Arthritis is not a one way street and with careful treatment can improve significantly. Pain killers mask the pain and can actually make this condition worse as you overuse irritated tissues in your hip. Even if you need a hip replacement, Osteopathy can shorten post op recovery time, and skilfully balance the way the hip moves so prolonging the life of the hip inserts.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis can affect women as they get older, and it is important to build up your bones with exercise, and balance the function of your body so that loads are gently absorbed by a spring (which is what your spine should be!). Treatment to steadily get your back, pelvis and hips loosened up can transform hip pain in the elderly. This can mean the difference between getting about and being housebound.

How Does An Osteopath Treat Hip Pain?

An Osteopath will only use their hands and brain to skilfully and logically assess your symptoms. We train for many years to feel what is normal and what is in trouble, and Osteopathy is a fantastic method for getting your body back in tip-top shape again.

We don’t use machines or ask you to do endless exercises that you find difficult and don’t help (or even make you worse). We just get your body working properly by aligning everything, relaxing it on a deep level, and getting the parts of your body talking to each other. Treatment is typically very gentle and relaxing. Healing comes naturally without drugs or surgery.

This means you can be well in a truly natural way, by in the end the miracle of your body healing itself.

And here's the best bit... By fixing the root cause of your problems, frequently people find that related issues that are connected also show drastic improvement, so you get help with all sorts of issues you didn’t even realise were connected.

Osteopath Reviews

From clients benefiting from a better quality life

I cannot speak highly enough of the service here. I came on the advice of a freind with a suspected frozen shoulder, which at the time was astonishingly painful. It turns out that it was likely a partially dislocated shoulder, and thanks to the brilliant analysis and help of Omer it is now on the mend. The help and advice was spot on, and I'll make a habit of coming with any muscular problem in the future.Put simply, if you have a problem this is the place to go. It is absolutely amazing.

My 8 month old daughter had treatment with Giulia at Fulham osteopath as she wasn’t meeting some milestones and we were a little concerned. Giulia was very welcoming and reassuring right from the beginning. When my daughter had her first treatment with Giulia, the next day she was able to meet that milestone as if nothing had happened, we were amazed at how quickly the treatment worked and we were really pleased to see that.Giulia recommended to have two more treatments for her and with those treatments things just got better for her in regards to meeting her milestones. We highly recommend Giulia for anyone who might be facing the same concerns for their little ones.

I have been treated by Verena Leo at Fulham Osteopaths in the last few months for a hip imbalance which causes complications such as trochanteric tendonitis and bursitis. But of course she looks at the skeleton as a whole. She has a very informed and gentle approach, which I like. She never rushes things, explains well and gives exercises to help further at home. I am pleased and have brought my teenage daughter, who has posture issues, to be treated by her too. Definitely recommended.

I have been intermittently using Fulham Osteopaths over the years and always had a really positive experience. Recently, Omer has been incredibly helpful, I went in due to an aching shoulder that had been bothering me for a couple of months, and not only has he really helped with that, but my recent sessions have made my whole back feel looser. I can feel the difference day to day and appreciate it enormously.

Omer is a great practitioner with a warmpersonality. He helped me with plantar fasciitis in particular and the results of the adjustments were impressive. During the session he will explain what is going on in your body and make you aware of the restrictions and differences after the treatment. He also gives tailored advice and exercises do to at home. All in all, thank you Omer and would recommend!

I’ve seen Verena quite a few times over several years for neck and back problems. She is a really great listener and has an exceptional ability to understand your problems, tackle them in the clinic--firmly but gently--and to give advice on how to continue to heal. I can’t recommend Verena too highly.

Great osteopaths, took our 4 week old there for feeding issues and the team were fantastic, the staff are really supportive and friendly and Verena was super helpful in assessing and treating him, as well as providing us with a set of exercises that we could do at home. We have been going regularly ever since and have seen a positive difference in his feeding as well as his overall movement and mobility. Thanks team!

Fulham osteopaths was recommended by a friend for our 2 month old daughter. Lucas was very welcoming at reception and made sure she would have an appointment asap. He’s always proactive and very responsive giving very helpful information re appointments/payment. Our baby was seen very quickly. Melinda was very attentive, thoughtful, caring and very professional. We started seeing improvements straight away, given exercises to do at home and she is thriving now. Will 100% recommend Melinda!
