Common Causes Of Foot And Ankle Pain

Our feet take a lot, so if things are not working as they should, life can come to a standstill. The main causes include:
A traumatic event, which can damage the bones and joints of the foot
Wear and Tear - Just slowly asking more of the foot ankle than it can handle
Posture and stress - as we slump, so the weight falls unevenly on the foot, straining the arches
Sports injuries, exercise routines or just having too much fun! This includes Achilles Tendon trouble, tendonitis and Plantar Fasciitis, pain across the sole of the foot
Wear and tear as you get older, leading to inflammation and compression of your joints, like with Bunions or Hammer toes.

Foot And Ankle Pain Explained In Plain English

Foot and Ankle Pain affects movement due to a combination of issues with your muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves.

Foot and Ankle pain ranges from an annoying niggle that comes and goes, to stronk pain that stops you walking.

Sometimes these problems resolve with time, rest or exercise. More often the problem doesn’t get better properly and feels stiff, painful or vulnerable so that you are afraid of getting back to normal activities. This is when a professional opinion and treatment is really helpful.

Untreated, these pains can go from short easy to fix problems, to long term and harder to fix problems. Nobody likes taking pain killers or contemplating surgery. It’s important to choose a treatment which is safe, effective and proven thousands of times over all over the world.

What Are The Major Causes Of Foot And Ankle Pain?

We've already dealt with some of the common causes such as trauma and posture. However, let’s dive in a little deeper to see which foot and ankle conditions Osteopathic care provides a safe non surgical solution for:

Achilles Tendonitis

This gives pain at the back of the ankle, typically worse for walking, especially uphill. Fraying and tearing of the tendon leads to swelling and pain. In extreme cases the tendon can break.

The big toe turns in and gets very sore at the joint where it meets your foot. This is nearly always related to back and hip issues.

Plantar Fasciitis

A layer passes across the sole of your foot from front to back. If this gets overloaded from posture etc, it can become very very sore and even lead to painful bony spikes where the fascia meets the heel.

Sprained Ankle

This is where you turn over your ankle, damaging the ligaments of the ankle. It tends to happen repeatedly, as the ligaments get more damaged and offer less support.

Excess Weight

Our bodies are designed to carry our weight as nature intended. This is just common sense, but not so easy to fix!

How Does An Osteopath Treat Foot And Ankle Pain?

An Osteopath will only use their hands and brain to skilfully and logically assess your symptoms. We train for many years to feel what is normal and what is in trouble, and Osteopathy is a fantastic method for getting your body back in tip-top shape again.

We don’t use machines or ask you to do endless exercises that you find difficult and don’t help. We just get your body working properly by aligning and relaxing everything, and getting the parts talking to each other. Treatment is typically very gentle and relaxing. Healing comes naturally without drugs or surgery. With foot trouble we will work on the foot but also on your back, hips and knees to make sure everything is working properly.

This means you can be well in a truly natural way, by in the end the miracle of your body healing itself.

And here's the best bit... By fixing the root cause of your problems, frequently people find that related issues that are connected also show drastic improvement, so you get help with all sorts of issues you didn’t even realise were connected.

Osteopath Reviews

From clients benefiting from a better quality life

Melinda is the best you can get!! I went to see her after my scan showed my baby in breach position. Melinda put me at ease and the adjustments she made were totally pain free and relieved tightness in my back. Within 36 hours my baby turned… totally amazing. This may not work for everyone, but it’s worth a go … especially over the likely stress and pain that comes with the ECV hospital treatments.

I cannot speak highly enough of the service here. I came on the advice of a freind with a suspected frozen shoulder, which at the time was astonishingly painful. It turns out that it was likely a partially dislocated shoulder, and thanks to the brilliant analysis and help of Omer it is now on the mend. The help and advice was spot on, and I'll make a habit of coming with any muscular problem in the future.Put simply, if you have a problem this is the place to go. It is absolutely amazing.

My 8 month old daughter had treatment with Giulia at Fulham osteopath as she wasn’t meeting some milestones and we were a little concerned. Giulia was very welcoming and reassuring right from the beginning. When my daughter had her first treatment with Giulia, the next day she was able to meet that milestone as if nothing had happened, we were amazed at how quickly the treatment worked and we were really pleased to see that.Giulia recommended to have two more treatments for her and with those treatments things just got better for her in regards to meeting her milestones. We highly recommend Giulia for anyone who might be facing the same concerns for their little ones.

I have been treated by Verena Leo at Fulham Osteopaths in the last few months for a hip imbalance which causes complications such as trochanteric tendonitis and bursitis. But of course she looks at the skeleton as a whole. She has a very informed and gentle approach, which I like. She never rushes things, explains well and gives exercises to help further at home. I am pleased and have brought my teenage daughter, who has posture issues, to be treated by her too. Definitely recommended.

I have been intermittently using Fulham Osteopaths over the years and always had a really positive experience. Recently, Omer has been incredibly helpful, I went in due to an aching shoulder that had been bothering me for a couple of months, and not only has he really helped with that, but my recent sessions have made my whole back feel looser. I can feel the difference day to day and appreciate it enormously.
