Elbow pain, including 'Tennis Elbow', is when repeated stress from any activity is placed on the elbow joint. The main causes include:
pain
Repetitive strain (RSI) where repeated use overloads the elbow
pain
Long working hours with mouse and keyboard work
pain
Neck and shoulder trouble which affects the elbow
pain
Sports injuries, such as Tennis & Golf
pain
Falls, sprains and fractures where the elbow is vulnerable, even in children
pain
Musicians and craftsmen, long hours of practice

Elbow Pain Explained In Plain English

Elbow pain comes from the elbow joint and the muscles near it. It can also refer from the neck and shoulder, so you feel elbow pain but the elbow is actually ok.

Elbow pain ranges from annoying niggles and clicks that comes and goes, to severe disabling continuous pain that no amount of rest and painkillers seems to help.

Often elbow problems resolve with time, rest or reducing stress... More often the problem doesn’t get better properly and feels weak, painful or vulnerable, so you are afraid of getting back to normal activities. This is when a professional opinion and treatment is really helpful.

Untreated, these pains can go from short easy to fix problems, to long term and harder to fix problems. Nobody likes taking pain killers or contemplating surgery. It’s important to choose a treatment which is safe, effective and proven thousands of times over all over the world.

What Are The Major Causes Of Elbow Pain?

We've already dealt with some of the common causes such as accidents and overuse. However, let’s dive in a little deeper to see which elbow conditions Osteopathic care provides a safe non surgical solution for:

Tennis Elbow

Sadly, you don’t have to play tennis to get tennis elbow. It derives from the muscles which lift your hand back, like with using a mouse. Where the muscles come together at the elbow, that’s where you get overstrain and pain. It’s felt on the outside of the elbow near the bone.

Golfer's Elbow

This is similar to tennis elbow, but instead comes from the muscles in your forearm which pull your wrist forwards.

Knocks and Bumps

When you bump the exposed parts of the elbow, the bone is very close to the surface with minimal padding. The bone surface can get bruised.

Tendonitis

A lot of tendons cross the elbow joint at the front and at the side. They can get irritated and sore with overtraining or overwork without enough time for rest and recovery

RSI

Repetitive strain means you have hurt something, but kept going until your body finally says “STOP”. This is hard to repair as the area is often swollen with fraying of the tissues which need to repair.

How Does An Osteopath Treat Elbow Pain?

An Osteopath will only use their hands and brain to skilfully and logically assess your symptoms. We train for many years to feel what is normal and what is in trouble, and Osteopathy is a fantastic method for getting your body back in tip-top shape again.

We don’t use machines or ask you to do endless exercises that you find difficult and don’t help. We just get your body working properly by aligning everything, and getting the parts talking to each other. Treatment is typically very gentle and relaxing. Healing comes naturally without drugs or surgery. The elbow responds very well to being relaxed using our special techniques. And don’t worry, we will always check your neck and shoulder to see if the problem is related to other areas.

This means you can be well in a truly natural way, by in the end the miracle of your body healing itself.

And here's the best bit... By fixing the root cause of your problems, frequently people find that related issues that are connected also show drastic improvement, so you get help with all sorts of issues you didn’t even realise were connected.

Osteopath Reviews

From clients benefiting from a better quality life

Melinda has been amazing! She’s really helped me to recover postpartum and I wish I visited her during my pregnancy. I had quite a few complicated issues due to my pregnancy and she really helped me to feel like myself again. My postpartum recovery wouldn’t have been the same without her. Thank you so much with your magic touch!

Excellent service and very professional. I was in a lot of back pain and Tino fixed it after just the first appointment! He also recommended some great exercises to prevent it happening again - I would highly recommend.

I went to Guilia initially with a stiff lower back that was stopping me training. Not only did she quickly free up my lower back but has worked on my upper and mid back making me much more able to move the way I want to! I would highly recommend Fulham Osteopaths and Guilia.

Melinda and Andrew run an amazing practice. Fulham Osteopaths have helped me recover from various injuries in the last few years. Verena has been ‘applying her magic’, for want of technical terminology, for only three sessions and already I feel confident she will get me back on the tennis court. She is very thorough, methodical and understanding and set me some excellent exercises to maintain progress in between visits.

Verena was vey helpful and after the first visit my neck pain has improved significantly. She is very knowledgeable and was able do diagnose quickly the underlying issue. She also advised me on a right pillow and desk setup, which defiantly were root causes of my neck problems.

Such amazing treatment from start to finish. A warm welcome, amazing heartfelt diagnosis and treatment second to none. My son has been in and out of doctors and hospitals but nothing worked until he was seen here. Now he doesn’t ever have a migraine after years and years of pain and discomfort. I can throughly recommend Fulham Osteopath, it’s changed our lives. Thank you.

I visited Katharine in a lot of headache pain. She studiously took my health history, discussed what she was going to do and gave me a treatment on my initial appointment. I then had two further appointments where she gave me a treatment and exercises to relieve my symptoms between treatments. I found her to be personable, warm and responsive. My headache has not completely disappeared but certainly has been made more bearable! Would highly recommend!

From the moment my client and her newborn baby met Melinda I watched a sense of calmness descend on a pair of troubled shoulders. We were all made to feel welcome and instantly knew we were in the best hands possible. Melinda has the most incredible knowledge built up from years of clearly loving what she’s does, and is a delight to watch as she expertly “felt” her way over the baby, in order to diagnose how best to help her feel less stressed from a quick birth. She explained every step of what she was doing, took great care to ensure both mum and her baby were comfortable at all times and happily answered every question we had.The practice has kept all COVID-19 sanitation measures in place and strived to keep all clients distanced and safe.I highly recommended not only Melinda but the whole of the practice.
