Common Causes Of Anxiety & Stress

Many people describe themselves as stressed, and a lot of evidence points to health problems from skin issues to pain. The main causes include:
pain
A traumatic event, like a personal or work crisis
pain
Just too much to cope with, so you can’t face things
pain
Life events like moving house
pain
Financial and work related worries

Anxiety & Stress Explained In Plain English

Stress is simply where we can’t cope with what is in our life, both psychologically and physically - but of course these two are linked.  Stress affects every aspect of our lives, and even if we just get on with it eventually it catches up with us.

Stress is a personal thing and not always obvious. It makes us prone to physical aches, pains and minor illnesses, and our mood and outlook.

There are lots of self help approaches to stress, but sometimes the problem seems stuck.

Untreated, Stress can lead to more severe problems like panic attacks and all sorts of stress related problems with breathing, the heart and digestion.

What Are The Major Causes Of Stress

Stress comes from three things:

  • How much is on our plate
  • How serious those things are
  • What that means to us

Total load

Many people have so much going on. Work, family, relationships, illness, financial worries, and children. There comes a point where we just can’t cope with it all, and we start to underperform or reach crisis point

Life Events

Some things are very important when it comes to stress. Moving house is near the top of the list! But so is pain, ill children and elderly relatives - the list is long.

Our Personal Resilience

Sometimes even in the face of minor issues we somehow can’t stay on top. That may be because of levels of exhaustion, masked by adrenaline and our desire to keep going. Often the most hard working and most conscientious people suffer the most. This can lead to exhaustion and long term trouble like Long Covid, Chronic Fatigue etc.

Pain & Disability

Pain registers as an emergency to our system, turning on fight or flight. We burn energy, till there's none left…

And disability is frustrating, annoying, and stops you getting on with things.

How Does An Osteopath Treat Stress?

An Osteopath will only use their hands and brain to skilfully and logically assess your symptoms. We train for many years to feel what is normal and what is in trouble, and Osteopathy is a fantastic method for getting your body and mind back in tip-top shape again.

We don’t use machines or ask you to do endless exercises that you find difficult and don’t help. We just get your body working properly by relaxing everything, aligning everything, and getting the parts talking to each other. Treatment is typically very gentle and relaxing.

Healing comes naturally without drugs or surgery. There is a lot of energy wasted with physical tension, and profoundly relaxing Cranial Osteopathy is very effective at breaking stress cycles. The body relaxes, we have more energy, we can cope, we feel better, we exercise - and so we get better instead of worse.

This means you can be better in a truly natural way, by in the end the miracle of your body healing itself.

And here's the best bit... By fixing the root cause of your problems, frequently people find that related issues that are connected also show great improvement, so you get help with all sorts of issues you didn’t even realise were connected.

I took my baby to see Katherine to help with sleeping issues. She immediately noted areas of tightness causing him pain and after one session he was sleeping through the night. After four sessions he was a different baby, sleeping and eating batter leading to a much happier baby. I wish I had taken him earlier!

Andrew Cotton is such professional, experienced, gifted, caring and talented Osteopath. I am so lucky to have found him to resolve a neck issue which was giving me the most horrendous pain in my shoulder and migraines. I was in agony when I first arrived and a few sessions later, I am now pain free, have a much greater range of movement and able to turn my neck again! Such a brilliant result! Thank you Andrew for your talent.

I first discovered Fulham Osteopaths as a sleep-deprived first time Mum - I did not know what osteopathy was before then! I am so grateful to have Fulham Osteopaths as part of my community - Melinda is so lovely (as are her staff!) and the practice exemplifies holistic care that is critically missing in many parts of our health system. Now my whole family receives care from the practice and every time, no matter the niggle (or emergency!) we receive excellent care throughout. Many thanks!!
