Dr Sarah June Wells

MBBS BSc MRCGP (GP)

Having qualified as a doctor at Imperial College London, I then went on to complete my General Practice training in West London.
Before my specialty training, in 2013, I took a sabbatical, feeling exhausted with London life as a doctor, and travelled to Myanmar to work in a makeshift hospital on the Thai border of Myanmar, for displaced communities and refugees. During my time here, I was amazed to witness a running acupuncture clinic in the hospital, and became aware of the profound effects this was having on some of the patients; not only physically, but for chronic pain, and emotional and psychological issues like PTSD.
This, along with the influence of my Taiwanese mum, and eccentric Daoist philosopher, Qi Gong and Tai Chi master father, led me to spend more time in Asia.
After this stint, I stumbled upon a back to basics tree house style retreat in the Philippines, where I was immersed in yoga and meditation practice, and studied the benefits of plant-based and alkaline eating, especially in periods of detox and healing.
I finally felt rested and replenished, and returned to London with a revived love for medicine, and a curiosity at how I could combine Western and Eastern practices, with more emphasis on prevention, and this is what continues to drive my practice every day.
It is also increasingly obvious to me that the same prescriptive protocol cannot possibly apply to every body/personality/cultural-type and a personalised approach to health is essential.
My aim is to enhance and emphasise the best quality of life and living; I like to look at lifestyle and how you exercise, sleep, eat, and the rest, as foundations to good health.
I have since completed a course in medical acupuncture and I use this in my GP practise for things like back pain, headaches, insomnia and period/fertility issues.
I also trained in Vedic meditation and credit this to a huge part of my wellbeing, and use the tools I learned to help patients to alleviate symptoms of stress and anxiety.
