This complex and sometimes delicate area is something we work on with with some frequency. It has many strains placed upon it as it supports your head, and is often hurt in slow strains (postural, stress and worry, etc etc.) or in accidents (bumps, whiplash etc.)
With all of the nerves, pipes and tubes in the neck, it is often a source of trouble! Our patients tell us that Gentle Cranial Osteopathy is often the only treatment that helps or permanently resolves some of these problems.
We commonly treat the following...
• Headaches, migraine, cluster headaches
• Neck pain, stiff neck, clicking neck, ricked neck
• Sore shoulders
• Ear problems, dizziness, balance problems, tinnitus
• Menieres disease, facial and eye pain
• Glue ear and delivery injuries in babies
Many people suffer with recurring sore throats or annoying glitches with swallowing or their voice. Osteopaths can be very effective treating these issues, partly by improving the vitality of the throat tissues, and partly by addressing global toxicity states which lead to excess mucus production and membrane irritability. We offer a real alternative to prolonged medication and a problem that just won't clear up.
We commonly treat the following...
- sore throats
- voice overstrain
- torticollis in babies
- jaw issues, post dental trauma resolution
- neck trauma and baby delivery/forceps issues
Often strained in sporting injuries, or seemingly a problem coming for no apparent reason, the shoulder complex (and it is complex, including your upper ribs, the shoulder blade, the collarbone and the arm, to the shoulder joint itself with it's many muscles and tendons) can end up giving rise to all sorts of difficulties, from simple pulls and strains to the very painful and seemingly intractable "frozen shoulder".
Often the shoulder is closely linked to how your upper back and neck are working, and your Osteopath will always treat them as an organic whole. Even very difficult and seemingly impossible conditions can be resolved with the right treatment.
We often treat the following...
- Frozen Shoulder
- Pains shooting from or to neck and/or upper back
- Arthritis, rheumatism
- Tendonitis, bursitis, sports injuries
Either from a fall, or long hours at work or play, some of the most painful and chronic conditions occur here. In our modern lives we try to balance our responsibilities, but sometimes the needs of our body (the right balance of rest and exercise for us, eating well, sleeping well..) can be forgotten until our body says "Hey, what about me!" in no uncertain terms. This is why an Holistic approach can help since it balances effective treatment to promote healing, and also looks unerringly for the cause which can be almost anything.
We will treat nearly all problems here, including the following;
- Tennis and Golfers elbow
- Sore wrists and fingers
- All sorts of problems involving pins and needles, numbness, weakness etc.
- The difficulties arising from incompletely resolved bone fractures and muscular tears.
- Tendonitis, RSI (repetitive strains) of all types.
Osteopaths are fully trained to recognise problems which may require referral to other medical specialists. We may also call for X-Rays, MRI's, blood tests etc. if necessary. We have access to private labs and imaging facilities, or can work with your GP or specialist.
Treating your back is what Osteopaths and Chiropractors have become recognised as offering the most effective treatments for. Back pain is a condition which is of epidemic proportions in our society, with so many people suffering pain, difficulty at work and with their leisure pursuits. There are so many treatments advised from different people, from the medications etc. from Doctors, to exercises, ultrasound, Yoga, Pilates and home remedies from rest to poultices. It is truly difficult to know what to do for the best!
Research into Back pain treatments by the alternative and complementary therapies can be awkward, because scientific research requires some control of a known (or at least diagnosed) problem. But the alternative therapies say that everybody, and every treatment, is and must be unique. This makes research a challenge.
However, the research which has looked at treatment for back pain shows that Manual treatment offers on average more benefit than simply using painkillers, or exercises. Our experience is that most back problems respond very well to our treatment. We also work with a network of other types of therapists. We have tried many of these treatments ourselves, and hence can work from different angles to overcome what can be such a debilitating and distressing condition.
You might not immediately think of seeing an Osteopath for abdominal problems. However, your gut is really a long muscular tube, and it is strongly affected by both your spine and stress more generally. In fact it is an Osteopathic maxim that "structure governs function". In this case, the abdomen might have post operative traumatic memory, or might be chronically contracted secondary to spine trouble. That is because the back of your front is the front of your back...
We commonly treat the following;
• gastritis
• colic in babies
• ulcers
• post operative trauma, adhesions
• spastic colon
Some more complex problems like Crohns and Colitis are often helped by our treatment, but may need a longer course to get results. We work with our other alternative practitioners, and even seemingly stuck problems can be progressed.
The knee can be hurt directly in sports injuries, falls etc and can sometimes not have recovered full function following an operation.
Alternatively, the knee often has to accommodate strains from foot trouble, or postural issues more generally. In no position to accommodate these strains, the knee is sometimes a simply overwhelmed joint unable to cope with the demands from elsewhere. This is why your Osteopath will always listen to a very full case history from you, even asking about seemingly unrelated issues in your body. This is added to a thorough postural and movement assessment to look for the cause, (if it is not obvious!). Treatment follows both to calm the injured area and promote
- Clicking, grinding, locking
- Osgood-Schlatters, growing pains
- aches, pains, "things not right"
- swelling, arthritis, water on the knee, bakers cyst
- housemaids knee, bursitis (etc. etc)
Often injured playing sport or in falls, our feet take a lot of stress in our lives and can, despite being marvels of design, eventually get weighed down by the loads we put them under! We then encase them in sometimes less than perfect footwear and the end result can be very painful, especially since it is hard to rest your feet!
What most people do not realise is that a great many foot problems are a sign of strain being passed to the foot from elsewhere in the body. The cure, therefore, may not lie in the foot. Without a careful assessment of hip and spinal function, it is impossible to fully resolve foot problems that are a sign of whole body issues. These include flat feet, plantar fasciitis, achilles strains and bunions. Often people are fobbed off with arch supports or foot exercises, or even given unnecessary surgery with sometimes quite awful results. Andrew, one of our Senior practitioners, has studied these problems extensively following incredibly enlightening classes from Thomas Myers fifteen years ago on the very sophisticated myofascial analysis of foot problems, he being a student of the genius Ida Rolf. Whatever you may have been told, our experience is that nearly all foot problems can be helped, even post surgery cases. Please enquire for more details.
